In particular, the DAI study investigated (a) how a purposively sampled set of five teacher preparation programs in three states supported elementary candidates in developing ambitious mathematics and English language arts (ELA) instruction; (b) factors that were associated with how graduates of these programs enacted mathematics and ELA instruction as first- and second-year teachers; and (c) factors that were associated with program graduates’ knowledge, self-efficacy, and retention as first- and second-year teachers.
We collected classroom observation data and survey data from 83 first-year teachers and 70 second-year teachers in order to examine factors associated with the quality of their instructional practices in mathematics and ELA. In addition, we collected survey data from 175 first- and second-year teachers to investigate factors associated with their levels of mathematical and reading knowledge for teaching and self-efficacy related to teaching mathematics and reading; and their retention decisions.

Further, we collected interview data from teacher education program directors, field placement coordinators, and elementary mathematics and ELA methods instructors; and survey data from cooperating teachers and university supervisors to explore elementary candidates’ learning opportunities in courses and field placements.
